Hoomgrah Chandbila High School (West Mednipur): The school started planting trees since 1983 and medicinal plants since 2006. It has conserved about 350 different species of plants resulting not only in a green surrounding but also improving the utility and quality of prevalent laterite soil in the region. By developing a natural ecosystem through conserving a lot of insects and plants species, the school premise has also become a home to 25-30 different varieties of birds.
Krishna Chandrapur High School (Sunderbans): The school did exemplary work on water and sanitation by creating its own rain water harvesting unit and thus reducing underground water usage by the school to a minimal level. The school has a WatSan committee managed by the students, where 1/- per month is charged by each students of the school, which is utilised for the upkeep and maintenance of the waste and sanitation units of the school. Kamarpara High School: A barren 5 acre land of the school has been converted into a thriving garden with 36 different species of plants under the supervision of the motivate school teachers and its students. Rain water harvesting conserves about 600-900 liters of water per day. Energy conservation efforts are also made through use of CFL bulbs, etc, which has helped the school in saving 5 to 6 units of electricity per day.
Shibda Colony F.P School (Burdawan): Under the guidance of the headmaster, Mr. Priyabandhu Maji, little children started their plantation drive. The students with teacher, started composting and use the manure in the school plantation drive. Along with the teachers, the little brigade encouraged villagers to be environment friendly by using manure instead of chemical fertilizers in their farms.
Shri Shikshayatan School: The green monitors of the school conducted energy audit of the school and was able to achieve 33% reduction in consecutive electricity bill. The students in their polybag free drive replaced the polythene bags from shopkeepers with the 2000 paper bags made by them. 20 students were made plastic police who monitored the use and disposal of plastics inside the school.
Delhi Public School (Newtown): The students of the school took a special research based initiative in the school to develop a carbon calculator. The school also initiated composting programme in the campus for the food waste generated by the canteen.
Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls High School: The students have taken initiative in converting the waste to manure by recycling and also cleaning public places in the cleanliness drives. They have participated in various walks to conserve water and other resources. The school through various activities is trying to create a healthy environment.

Sowing seeds: With Paryavaran Mitra"(Friends of the Environment) the CEE and EDN have started mobilising the schoolgoing young - especially in urban areas - to actively participate in the preservation of their planet through positive action for the environment.
"Paryavaran Mitra" (Friends of the Environment) is a nationwide programme implemented by CEE (Centre for Environment Education) in partnership with Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and ArcelorMittal India.

The programme aims to create a network of 20 million young leaders from schools across the country, which has the awareness, knowledge, commitment, and potential to resolve local environmental issues - be it in school premises, at home or in the community - in five thematic areas: Water and Sanitation, Energy, Biodiversity and Greening, Waste Management, Culture and Heritage.

Delegates and organisers watch the short film “We are the young leaders for change”
On May 14, 2014, the West Bengal state felicitation event of Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar 2013 was held at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata to recognise the exemplary work done by the young Paryavaran Mitras and schools committed to environment.

Shri Shikshayatan School, Delhi Public School (New Town), Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls High School, Hoomgrah Chandabila High School, Shibada Colony F.P. School, Kamarpara High School, and Krishna Chandrapur High School presenting their initiatives and actions taken for a better environment through PowerPoint presentations.

A short movie was shown to the students by CEE named “We are the young leaders for change” to motivate them even further to become a true and regular Paryavaran Mitra and understand their local issues better.

“Nature is our first teacher,” says Prof. N. Bandyopadhyay, (Adviser, West Bengal Pollution Control Board). “Humans are the cause of the present day crisis – acute freshwater shortage, climate change, etc. and it is we the humans who can solve it,” he continued. “So, don’t just be aware of the problem, take actions!”

Karuna Singh (Country Director - India, Earth Day Network) says, “We are a network – hence whatever we do, we do it for all and I am surprised to see such good work done by the young students with support of their teachers.”

All seven schools mentioned above had been shortlisted from the various nominations/entries that were received in the state and are already declared winners. Reema Banerjee, CEE Kolkata In-charge, along with guests Prof. N. Bandyopadhyay and Karuna Singh felicitated the winners, who came from five districts of the state.

“In a population of 7.162 billion and increasing by the second, with coveted organisations at all levels fostering for a better environment I always wondered where the results are. If Paryavaran Mitra continues providing us with such forum, the change shall be visible for everyone to see,” said Zarine Khan, Delhi Public School (New Town).

Do not live with problems but look for ways to understand and solve problems in your unique ways... lets us all be a Paryavaran Mitra!
