Upcycling
Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. Downcycling involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality. Most recycling involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material.

Kolkata (Calcutta) girl Stephanie Chatterton sees the beauty in what we generally term as junk or waste. Loreto House, Kolkata, alumna Stephanie is a young teacher at the Calcutta Boys School, who loves and the Planet (and also, doggies!), which inspired her to use the power of upcycling to make an array of accessories and decorative items for your home or office - cute fluffy monsters from which her enterprise gets the name, to the exquisitely beautiful trees made of metal wire.
Earthsmiles.net caught up with Stephanie for a short Q&A and a peek at her art.

Raul David: When did you start Monsters Workshop?
Stephanie Chatterton: When… I officially started Monsters Workshop on 9 February, 2017 by starting a page on Facebook.

RD: What inspired you to start upcycling as an enterprise?
SC: I have always recycled things at home to make into gifts and other items. There is so much one can do with recyclable items at home which people have forgotten about or consider it to be garbage. So I wanted to start something to show people you can make so much with the things that are usually thrown out. And it helps the environment.
RD: What are your signature products?
SC: Some of my signature products are my little monsters I make from wool to go with the name Monsters Workshop.
RD: Which products are most in demand?
SC: The products which have been on demand are my painted bottle lamps and during Christmas, my snowflakes made with my glue gun and glitter!
RD: How is the acceptance of recycled/upcycled products in our city? How is the peoples’ response?
SC: It has not been easy. It has its ups and downs but so far people have gotten interested in the things I make; I wanted to show people the different things that one can do with stuff at home. Not many people appreciate stuff like this. So making recycled items will help people get refreshed to see products out of the ordinary made from regular things. It'll excite their imagination and get them to try to make recycled products themselves as the items are available in their homes. This will get more people to recycle and this will help the environment further.
