Trees = Life!

Why the forest is important? Because trees absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into wood, where the carbon stays bound up for hundreds or even thousands of years, living forests are an important part of the earth's climate system. Growing trees soak up CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in their trunks, roots, leaves, and forest soils.
Why do we need the trees?
Tress provide us with oxygen that we need to breathe to live. Our body breathes in oxygen and we breathe out carbon-di-oxide. Trees do the opposite;they breathe in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. In this way, trees make sure that we have pure oxygen to breathe without which we cannot live.

Green affair
Green for Life Foundation's Van Mahotsav '16 was an exhibition cum sale of eco friendly items by various NGOs and a program in which NGOs and schools participated respectively, for the primary objective – planting trees.

Kolkata – On the July 30, 2016, Van Mahotsav celebrations ’16 were held at the Church of Christ The King organised by the Green For Life Foundation. The event was an exhibition cum sale of eco friendly items by various NGOs and a program in which NGOs and schools participated respectively, for the primary objective – planting trees.

Mrs Karuna Singh, head of EarthDay Network India, was the primary speaker at the event, and her talk was a very interactive one – she invited the school students, who were occupying the last rows, to the front seats as ‘they are the future’.

Mrs Mallika Jalan also spoke in the same vein as Mrs Singh, namely on the the dire environmental conditions that we face nowadays; leading to disasters right now around our country - floods in Bengaluru and Mumbai and pollution high in Delhi and Kolkata.

Greenhouse Gases and climate change was also discussed, and the audience was then shown an interactive video on climate change and its effects.

The Green For Life Foundation trustees felicitated the Chief guest, was none other than Mr Arun Lal, former Indian cricketer and commentator, while being an avid environmentalist at the same time, with his own organic farm. Mr Lal delivered a gripping speech which left each one hanging on each word of his. “It's not an obligation, it's a passion, it comes from within”, was probably the most inspiring outtake from his speech.

Students from St James, Shri Shikshayatan, The Assembly of God Church School, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, St Teresa’s School, St Peter’s School, Union Chapel, Modern School, St Anthony’s, Maheshwari Girls school, Loreto bowbazaar and others were then felicitated for their participation in Van Mahotsav ’16, Greening Young Minds and Tree Plantation Drive.

A skit was then staged by Moulali Rongoshilpi on spreading awareness about deforestation. After a few words from the trustees of the Foundation, the program was brought to a close.
