Venue: EarthSmiles.net Office, Kolkata, India
Organised by: EarthSmiles.net Kolkata/India
Event description: High school/college student festival organised to create awareness on environmental issues among student teens/twenties.
Score: 2 Planets
[+] Awareness within the target group is crucial for environmental protection as this group is poised to take a leading role in decisions affecting the planet. Also, influencing this group leads to planet-friendly habits which start the environmental saving process at the grassroots, lead to a snowball effect among peers.EarthSmiles.net has made a significant and measurable contribution to environmental protection. Few structures set up, and those made of ecofriendly /recycled material. Subtle Planet evangelism through events.
[+] Event was held close to participating instutions so CO2 production commuting on the fest days is assumed to be minimised Only accoustic music competition and natural food (including, but not limited to, solar cooked) caused less environmental harm compared to similar events. Also, waste from the festival was marked for reuse/recycling. Lighting and sound was kept to low-power devices only.
[-] Bottled wather was provided in 20 liter jars, while less harmfull than individual bottles, have a large carbon footprint.

What’s the greenest thing on a Kolkata rooftop? If you say “rooftop garden” your wrong! On November 19 and 20, 2011, it was EarthSmiles On the Roof! As part of EarthSmiles endeavours to green young minds, an invitation only inter school cum college fest - Earthsmiles On The Roof (EOTR) – was held on top of the roof of the EarthSmiles.net Park Street Office, in Kolkata. With the theme being “Take a right step - Love the world you’re on”, this unique concept in cultivating the culture of planet-friendliness saw participants from over half a dozen institutions display their eco-credentials at the weekend fest.

The venue was very beautifully decorated making full use of recycled/reused. A train of colourful foot prints led upstairs to the terrace, to the stage and even area, with the welcoming EarthSmiles team in their dark blue tee-shirts.

The beginning:
The Fest was declared open by Dapne D’Gama, an Earthsmiler since 2009, and, although many institutions had exams, participants from St. Xaviers College, Loreto College, AJC Bose College, IIHM, FAPS, BGESC, VLS, TSS, made it to the venue.

The First day of the fest saw such events as Ripped Planet (Collage), Green Paint (poster making), Planet Pix(photography), EnvirQ (Quiz), Just An [Earth] Minute (JAM), judged and moderated by Mr. Alan Furtado, Mr. Sunil Lucas and Dr. Noel Nyss.
An over the top eco fest on a roof top...
Green fest with a difference

Solar treats!
One of EarthSmiles.net's own design (and manufactured) solar ovens churned out pasta.
And finale:
The second day of the fest was started with Green Row (Debate) moderated by Fr. C.M. Paul SDB. Other events such as Greenerverse (original poetry competition and slam ) judged by Mrs. Jacqui Paul; and an afternoon of glamour and fashion (trashion, actually!) with events such as Junkyard Glam (Eco Creation) and Trashionista (Recycled fashion), judged and moderated by Mrs Michelle Dweltz-Hooper. This was followed by a musical evening with Unplugged (acoustic music competition).

Popular singer, Francis Lepcha, along with Mr. Birdie Jordan of Kolkata’s Barefoot, crowned the duo from AJC Bose College as winners. Francis later performed an environmental song for the audience. Loreto College was awarded the best institution – Eco Champions. Like the judges and moderators, they received a prize made of waste glass and metal.

Overall the fest was a little small in numbers, thanks to the limitations of a rooftop, but it made it up in spirit, with participants responding to the family feeling.

The organizers tried to keep the environmental footprint small, by inviting only nearby colleges and institutions, recycling all the paper waste (decorations, water cups,) and providing eco-friendly vegetarian food and natural drinks on the venue. There was also Solar Pasta – albeit too little to go around - cooked at the venue by the EarthSmilers!

Take a right step - Love the world you’re on. For EarthSmilers, it was a step in the right direction – and we’re looking for a bigger, better, second edition next year. To spread the love.
Trashionistas!
