Don't waste that waste!
The Rotary Club of Belur is adopting Green For Life Foundation's waste segregation and disposal method in two apartment blocks.
Part of their Swachh Bharat initiative (which included a rally, sometime back) the RCB had invited G4L Trustee, V.R. Xavier to speak at a meeting at the Hotel Hindustan International, Kolkata, November 1, 2014, and provide environmental awareness and action input of G4L's work. After hearing about the waste initiative, the club decided to implement it in buildings where its members were resident.
The G4L method uses 2 types of recycled paper bags, one specially designed for wet (biodegradable/ food) garbage and another for collecting plastic waste or other recyclables.
While households dispose the sealable wet garbage bag as usual (KMC vat/bin,) plastic is collected by G4L, who can be contacted with a text or call, when the bags are full,

"Swachh Bharat or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Campaign Clean India) is a national level campaign by the Government of India covering 4041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country." - Wikipedia

Kolkata – In October 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the nation to begin a united effort to make India clean and healthy. He nominated nine prominent personalities to take it forward, and these promised to tag more. Enthused by this, several organisations and individuals of all hues of society are also actively taking “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” (Clean India Campaign) forward in their respective locations. Volunteer for a Better India (VBI) is one of these organisations who have got solidly behind the mission for a Clean India – and a better country to live in.
So, on November 2, 2014, in association with VBI, the Eastern India Chartered Accountants Student Association (EICASA) of Eastern India Regional Council (EIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India participated in Swachh Bharat initiatives at Girish Park and Jaggu Bazar, Kolkata.
The programmes were coordinated by Mr. Pramod Dayal Rungta from EICASA and by Mr. Vishal Pai, Mr. Jinen Udani and Ms. Meghna Natrajan of VBI. The aim behind this initiative is not merely to clean certain localities but bring behavioural change among citizens and awareness among people about open garbage that rots and stinks further leads to harmful diseases.
The meeting points were iCore Planet Shopping Mall at Jaggu Bazar, and Ram Mandir at Girish Park. From there groups of volunteers got on the roads with their brooms, cleaning the area and also creating awareness about the movement among the shopkeepers in the localities. Around 200 shopkeepers pledged to maintain cleanliness around the place and prevent people from littering and making the city look like a giant garbage vat.

“Littering is one of worst habits we Indians have. With Swachh Bharat Abhiyan people are being awakened and since I also want my city to be clean, I have joined this initiative for a healthier tomorrow,” said Divyam Gupta, a VBI volunteer.
This is not the first attempt made by VBI to clean the city. Since October 2, 2014 (the day the Clean India Mission was launched nationally) volunteers have come forward to clean their city targeting different areas each Sunday.
In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Modi had talked of the Swachh Bharat Mission and called for India to be clean by October 2019, Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.
This work of cleaning India cannot be done by one person, or by Government functionaries alone – it has to be done by 1.25 billion people, who are sons and daughters of Mother India. So, only WE can CLEAN INDIA. Neither litter, nor let others litter!
