A few not so famous wildlife sanctuaries in India
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. Located on the banks of the Kali River, it is one of the highly visited wildlife sanctuaries in India. Black Panther, Flying Squirrel, Tiger, Elephant and Leopard can be easily spotted in this sanctuary. Among the wide range of amphibians, Crocodiles are the major attraction of this sanctuary. It is also an ideal place for river rafting, trekking, Bird watching, Tiger and Crocodile spotting.
Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary
Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located in Eturnagaram village in Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located 250 km (160 mi) away from Hyderabad.The sanctuary has southern tropical dry deciduous type of teak and its associates like thiruman, maddi, and bamboo, madhuca, terminalia, pterocarpus.A perennial water source called "DayyamVagu", divides the sanctuary into almost two halves. It is home to Tiger, Leopard, Wolf, Dholes, Golden jackals, Sloth bear, Blackbuck, Spotted deer, Indian giant squirrels and many kinds of birds.
Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary
Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife park in Chhattisgarh, India. The sanctuary houses a number of endangered animal species, including leopards, Bengal tigers, and wild bison. The forest vegetation mainly comprises sal, saja, bija, and bamboo.

| Garden of Heaven : Unlike most of the country's zoos, which are often ill maintained and have scarcely enough space for the inmates, Nandan Kanan is more a National Park. Wide open spaces and animals roaming their natural habitat are some of the features of the zoo, where even the tigers can hunt for prey if they so desire - or decide they like what the zoo keepers serve! |
Covering an area of over 900 acres, Nandan Kanan Zoological and Wildlife Sanctuary is one of its kind in the country, being the first zoo in India to join World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2009. Established in 1960, it was opened to the public in 1979 and also contains a botanical garden, besides a portion which has been declared a sanctuary.
Nandan Kanan literally means The Garden of Heaven. It is located near Odisha's state capital, Bhubaneswar, hemmed between the two wetlands of Kanija Lake and Kiakani Lake, which are adjacent to the natural forest of Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary.

Spotted deer, the largest family of Nandan Kanan, are kept in separate enclosures as the ever increasing number, from just twelve to a hundred and fifty, is a nightmare for the zoo’s three hundred plus workers. The thirty year old ‘Man of the Forest’, Bini, the only Orangutan of the nation was brought from Maharashtra in exchange of two elephants.
Nandan Kanan also provides tourists with four wildlife safaris - White tiger safari, African lion safari, Bear safari and a Herbivores safari. To shelter aquatic creatures, there are 34 aquaria with a large variety of fresh water fish.
Facilities
As one of the most attractive tourist spots the zoo authority takes special care for the cleanliness of the area with segregated garbage disposal system. For senior citizens and physically challenged there are electric cable cars to take them around the zoo.
Fund raising
To help involve the general public and raise money for animal conservation, the zoo started the Adopt-an-Animal programme in 2008. Adopters receive a customised adoption certificate and a free entry pass for each animal adopted. In addition, the adopter's name is displayed on a special board and mention is made in the annual report of the zoo. Adopters can pay from Rs. 500 for a small bird to Rs. 1,00,000 for a tiger for a year. The zoo authorities have made available two of the most attractive sites for adoption - the Lion Safari and Tiger Safari for which the adoption cost is Rs.1,000,000 and Rs. 500,000 respectively. The zoo is home to about 1660 animals representing 120 species; including 42 species of mammals, 54 species of birds and 24 species of reptiles. The death rate of animals here during the 2008-2009 fiscal years was one of the lowest in India at 3.1% per year (The national average is 10%.)
The wildlife refuge safeguards and breeds a number of endangered species. Mandarin Ducks, Pelicans, Heron, and the Siberian Squirrel make Nandan Kanan their home as does the White Peacock of Burma. The tiny (25cm) Squirrel Monkey that draws a massive crowd was bought from Central America in exchange for a massive White Tiger!
White tiger
Though a critically endangered species, the zoo proudly boasts of being the only breeder of the White Tiger, not only in India, but in the world. In 1980, the first litter of white tigers were born to father – daughter duo Deepak and Ganga — both normal tawny tigers. Subsequent litters of white tigers have been distributed to zoos both in India and internationally. Nandan Kanan presently is home to over 34 white tigers.
Other attractions
The biological garden also breeds the cold blooded gharials since 1980, when the creature (Gavialisgangeticus) was bred in captivity for the first time in India. It was also first in India to successfully breed Pangolins, commonly known as scaly anteaters.
