Don't waste that waste!
The Rotary Club of Belur is adopting Green For Life Foundation's waste segregation and disposal method in two apartment blocks.

Part of their Swachh Bharat initiative (which included a rally, sometime back) the RCB had invited G4L Trustee, V.R. Xavier to speak at a meeting at the Hotel Hindustan International, Kolkata, November 1, 2014, and provide environmental awareness and action input of G4L's work. After hearing about the waste initiative, the club decided to implement it in buildings where its members were resident.

The G4L method uses 2 types of recycled paper bags, one specially designed for wet (biodegradable/ food) garbage and another for collecting plastic waste or other recyclables.

While households dispose the sealable wet garbage bag as usual (KMC vat/bin,) plastic is collected by G4L, who can be contacted with a text or call, when the bags are full,

NEWS STORY | POSTED ON 02 DECEMBER 2014 | AGCS GREENATHON, SCHOOL ECO FEST, PAPER:BACK
Divya Dhamija, Staff Writer
I do write for the planet!
Greenathon Day
For the last few years, AGCS Park Street's Greenathon fest has been growing from strength to strength. This year, even more effort was put in - not just towards the eco awarness it generates , but also to make the fest itself a green event. We hope this realisation will make it a zero carbon event one day!

Kolkata – “With our annual fest ‘Greenathon Our Dream Kolkata Green’ we endeavour to provide a vibrant forum to interact with the students and to create young environmental catalysts that would become our future ‘change agents’,” says Victor Singh, the Principal of The Assembly of God Church School (AGCS) Park Street.

This year the ‘young eco catalysts’ from 15 city schools became part of a host of events at this annual students fest, themed on environment and nature, on November 29, 2014.

Mr. Verghese Kunjachan, Assistant Commissioner of Kolkata Police, West Bengal and Mr. Debashish Kumar, MMIC, Kolkata Municipal Corporation were the Chief Guests.

After unveiling the PlanetPoints Planet-friendly event certification, received by the school for its efforts in organising Greenathon 2014 in the greenest way possible, Mr. V. Singh, the School Principal and the chief guests planted saplings in the school premises and marking the beginning of the signature Mini-Marathon (of approx. 2.8 km) in the heart of the city.

Following the runners were other students walking with boards inscribes with green messages like ‘Plant for the planet’, ‘Nature protects, if she is protected’, etc; helping spread awareness about the growing concerns of our environment.

On-stage Inter-School competitions followed: G-TUNE - a Western Band Contest (where the host school brought home the first prize) and G-FUSION - a Fusion Dance Contest (where Ballygunj Shiksha Sadan were declared winners) Simultaneously, five other off-stages events took place: G-CHECK (Chess), G-COLLAGE (collage), G-INSPIRE (environment presentations), G-MUSE (creative writing) and G-SCRAP (upcycling).

“G-SCRAP is a new addition with a novel concept of using waste materials like refills, one sided papers, bottles, CDs, etc; to make something useful out of it”, said Rupa Pandit, teacher of AGCS.

There were counters by EarthSmiles.net, Green for Life Foundation (G4L), Garbage Free India (GFI) and Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) on each floor of the venue showcasing different ways in which students can contribute towards a healthy environment, and join various programmes.

Walk the talk: Awareness and a call to segregate waste for a cleaner Kolkata!

EarthSmiles.net PAPER: Back champions, Harrow Hall received their winner’s trophy, a green hamper (a Song of India plant and saplings, the whole school can enjoy!) and a citation from EarthSmiles.net for collecting a awesome total of 9kgs 577 gms of small, clean paper waste. South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE), has received all the tiny paper collected in this year’s PAPER: Back programme and will recycle it into useful articles. (Meanwhile, schools are excitedly collecting towards EarthSmiles.net PAPER: Back 2015)

"We (participated) in most of the events and we are very excited about it. Apart from being a fest, this is a general awareness programme and promotes thinking about the planet we live in," said Rebecca of Loreto House.
