Greenpeace leaves out the middle-man
Power from the people
By Arjun Raj
Greenpeace, the fiery environmental activists, get their funding directly from the masses. They feel their integrity would be compromised, since often; their methods are very aggressive and do not at all meet government approval!
They don’t get their funds from corporates either, as these companies are a major reason why the environment is in such a fragile condition – and therefore prime Greenpeace targets. Instead they ask the public for direct donations that are used to fund their campaigns. “Our vision of a better future is only as strong as the people who support us”, says the caption on the official Greenpeace website, www.Greenpeace.org
Greenpeace volunteers approach the man on the street everywhere in the world, and recently the EarthSmiles.net team spotted them on Chowringhee, Kolkata, India, raising funds on the street, handing out leaflets and entreating passersby to help them save the planet. Donations to Greenpeace can be given either online or offline, either as a onetime gift or a regular monthly contribution. Monthly contributions are preferred as Greenpeace could then plan ahead for their future campaigns, knowing a certain amount will be coming in.
Greenpeace has an office in Kolkata opposite the Rashbehari Triangular Park on Panditya Road. If you are interested in contributing to the work that Greenpeace is doing – and their work is extremely valuable - you can show your support with a monetary contribution, or even volunteer if you take your commitment to the environment passionately. Volunteering for Greenpeace requires a great amount of determination and application as the organisation campaigns are tough - and often radical. But there is room for everybody and you can contact them either by going to the Greenpeace office, or by filling in the form online at their website. Greenpeace is currently campaigning against global warming and genetic engineering of rice, “the world’s most staple food”.
