Recycling
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, energy usage, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by decreasing the need for "conventional" waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reuse, Reduce and Recycle" waste hierarchy. There are some ISO standards related to recycling such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practice.

Earthsmiles.net visited The Assembly of God Church School, Park Street to host the second “Revive” of the year. Ankur Kala, SAFE and Green for Life Foundation participated in the exhibition cum sale, but more NGOs and products are required to make it become an event identified with providing green alternatives.

Kolkata – On 13 May 2016, the Earthsmiles.net team hosted the second Revive of the year at The Assembly of God Church School, Park Street, Kolkata. Revive is a travelling exhibition-cum-sale of recycled and upcycled goods of various NGOs, which is held at schools all over Kolkata to answer the questions: What becomes of the plastic/paper/food we throw into recycle bins. Revive aims at closing the recycle bin-recycler-buyer cycle.
Revive spreads awareness about recycled products and encourages people to take the leap to purchase and use them. “I for one liked the idea behind this initiative very much and supported Rupa Ma’am for organising Revive with Earthsmiles.net”, said AGCS Park Street Vice-Principal Mrs. S. Shekhar. This is the third time Revive was hosted at AGCS.
| The NGOs set up their stalls at 10 a.m., just before the students were let out for recess. The stalls were placed on the second and ground floors of the building. As the students flooded the corridors, their eyes were visibly lit up at the artistic creations that were set out before them. Some walked up to the tables and started inspecting the items on display while inquiring the price of each thing they touched.
NGOs Ankur Kala, Green for Life Foundation and South Asian Forum for the Environment (SAFE) had on sale various paper products, organic food items, recycled plastic files, paper pencils, etc. EarthSmiles.net also presented its bookmarks made from recycled paper, key-chains made using bottle caps, papier mache iPhone cases, notepads made from one-side used papers, recycled pens, coasters made from soft drink cans, seed cards and potters made using soft drink bottles – all made by our artistic talent in the office!
The hit item was the seed cards, the students were first perplexed by what it was, but after explaining how to use them, the students found the concept very entertaining. One bespectacled boy studying in the 7th grade made 3 trips to our stall to pick up different seed cards. The recycled paper pencils were another hit with a certain student of Class 11 buying around 25 of them.
