Nature never betrayed the heart that loved it, said William Wordsworth but the human race has betrayed nature to the extent that “save the environment” is the cry of the twenty first century people. Today, not only the individual, state or nation but the whole world feels the adverse effects of environment degradation and it’s all because of their own disregard for the planet and the never ending demands! World Environment Day (WED) - this year on June 5 - is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), helps to spread awareness about how much we are hurting our environment and that we need to take serious actions immediately!

The activities such as street rallies and parades, concerts, tree planting, and clean-up campaigns are carried out to increase green footprints. For WED 2012, people across the world will be encouraged to carry out an environmental activity and help break the record for the greatest number of activities registered in WED’s four decade history.

One Green World
By Divya Dhamija

Everyone says that indiscriminate use of resources will lead to a bleak tomorrow: How come only the kids believe it?
Planting a tree is a good way to start the sustainable habit!
Every year, World Environment Day is hosted in a different country with a different theme for one week. The theme is selected along with an Environment Day slogan, which aims to highlight the importance of protecting our planet and to promote an understanding that each individual can play an effective role in reducing environmental issues. Last year India hosted the program, with the theme “Forest: Nature at your service”. This year the host for The World Environment Day 2012 is the Federative Republic of Brazil and the theme is Green Economy: Does it include you? There are two parts to this theme, where the first highlights the Green Economy and the second invites you to evaluate whether you are included in this vision of a brighter future.

A Green Economy is defined as one that results in an improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological deficiencies. The UNEP had launched ‘Green Economy Initiative’ to provide a broad and practical working mechanism, through analysis and policy support for investing in green sectors and in greening environmental unfriendly sectors. It is therefore not just a passing environmental rage but is “an essential solution for environment problems, because the problems are often deeply connected with poverty and economic issues”, says Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP.

And this year, there’s added encouragement to get active for the environment. Five fuel-efficient cars will be awarded by Kia, to the best WED projects from each of the following categories:
1. People: Biggest number of participants active for a WED activity.
2. Theme: Best supports WED 2012 theme: Green Economy: Does it include you?
3. Creativity: Most innovative, unique & fun WED activity.
4. Impact: Activity that results in the most effective change.

Ajay Khemka a senior citizen in Tatatalla, Kolkata, has this to offer: “Keeping and reusing materials was a way of life; but the new generation kids do not understand the value of things... we should recycle garbage to the right containers : YELLOW- Plastic. GREEN - Glass. BLUE- Paper and make our Earth green.”

Shalini, a school girl said on Environment Day the students of her school plant trees and clean the playgrounds, because it helps to keep the surroundings clean and healthy.

Though World Environment Day encourages a large mass to appreciate our environment and consider how we can help protect it for the benefit of all humanity, but we should not wait for a particular day to save our environment, we can always do little things everyday! Look at the top right hand corner of the EarthSmiles.net homepage to get a green tip to do - everyday!

So,

“Don’t be mean, go green!
Don’t be hollow, or else civilization will be swallowed
Take part in Environment Day and in future it will pay!”
