Urja Chetana
‘Urja Chetana’ is currently being implemented in 30 schools in and around Kolkata. The programme seeks to generate awareness and action on environment and sustainability among students, who would carry the learnings to their homes and communities. The teachers and students are trained through various workshops, conducted by experts, on conducting energy and waste audits, composting, paper recycling, rainwater harvesting among others. Schools undertake energy and waste audits as well as activities on composting, paper recycling, rainwater harvesting and medicinal garden development.

Kolkata – Under Urja Chetana programme, students from Jadavpur N. K. Pal Adarsha Shikshayatan celebrated World Environment Day (WED) with 30 children from Tiljala Shed organisation, 4 June 2016. A brief about the project and WED was given by Ms Arpita Ghose, Project Associate, CEE Kolkata. Mr Amitesh Roy, CSR Department, CESC Ltd., Ms Mehnaz, representative of Tiljala Shed and Shri Shyamal Mishra, Headmaster, Jadavpur N K Pal Adarsha Shikshayatan were among the key speakers for the event who motivated the students in their effort to protect and save the environment and wild life. The theme for World Environment Day 2016 is ‘Wild for Life’.
| The crux of the event was a skit on waste management and preservation of wild life, performed by the students of Jadavpur N K Pal. The play portrayed as to how the ever-increasing issue of waste generation has led to saturation of existing landfills, which eventually leads to engulfing nearby forest areas in search of new landfill site. Thus the very existence of wild life dwelling in these areas has been threatened.
The students communicated the message to bring about change in our day–to–day habits to minimise and manage waste generation. The students interacted with children from Tiljala Shed and exchanged their opinions on various issues. A sit and draw competition on the theme ‘Preservation of wild life habitats’ was conducted for the children. Everyone pledged to join hands together to make this world a better place. The winners will be awarded at Bal Urja Diwas in August.
‘Urja Chetana’, an environment sustainability education programme with schools, is a CSR initiative of CESC Limited, which is being implemented in partnership with Centre for Environment Education (CEE) since 2012. As a responsible corporate citizen, CESC is committed to protecting the environment and creating awareness and action towards it.
CEE is a national institution engaged in developing programmes and material to increase awareness about the environment and sustainable development. It was established in 1984 as a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Education, supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India.
