Making it green!

Check these few easy points to ensure your event isn't really damaging the Earth more, while celebrating it! Be Green!

1) Say No to plastic! This is number 1 and is easy to do. No bottled water for the judges, no plastic glasses, and no plastic bags allowed into the campus.

2) Invite local participation. If you can help it, invite school around the area - at most a few km away. Reduce the participants carbon footprint.

3) Masti Unplugged! Instead of blaring the decibels, keep it low (and low power consumption) with a unique acoustic music event.

4) Feel green. Have a social, green, message to share, and really change hearts! Have an Eco-anthem... take a green pledge... pass it on!

With more school nature clubs having fests, environment is cool for young adults, too
Cool KLIMA @ Loreto
Avani Jalan
AUGUST 2013
Thin green line : While most school "nature" fests are great opportunities for promoting true love and respect for the planet, they are often no more than occasions for young to come together and profess - through song, debate, competitions, etc - their love for the environment. The event itself can be far from planet-friendly, and almost never has an environmental management plan.
The Seventh Executive Board of the Nature Club of Loreto House presented Klima 2013, 19-20 July 2013. The main aim of the club is to instil in people, a love and compassion for nature as well as to try and bring about a positive change in our surroundings.

Keeping in line with this aim, the inter school fest with all its events, strove to promote change without hampering the natural balance of the environment. The logo of the fest was a white dolphin balancing a leaf and water on its shoulders. This was representative of the formation of the Earth and the perfect balance which must always be maintained between man and nature.

The inaugural lamp was lit by the Principal Sister Phyllis Morris, Vice Principal Mrs. Gauri Basu and the President of the club, Avani Jalan. The welcome address was followed by a delightful dance depicting the importance of the balance between the different elements of nature. With this, Klima 2013 was declared open!

The participating schools were Loreto Convent Entally, Loreto Day School Bowbazar, Loreto Day School Sealdah, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, St.James’ School, Don Bosco Park Circus, La Martiniere for Boys, The Heritage School, Calcutta Girls’ High School and the host school, Loreto House.

There were nine events (all with an eco-theme) - extempore speaking, creative writing, quiz, dustbin painting, wealth from waste, spray painting, debate, photography and music.

The extempore speaking event saw participants speaking on a variety of environment related topics from clean coal being an oxymoron to global warming being a blame game, tourism being more pollution than promotion and space colonisation being a necessity or a dream.

Wealth from Waste required the participants to recycle waste material and create something useful. Waste items such as old computer parts, old magazines, cartons and cloth were provided. A lamp and a bag made from these materials were judged the best.

The theme of the quiz was ‘All things nature’, was conducted by Mr. Errol O’Brien. He made the event witty, entertaining and at the same time, extremely informative about different environmental issues. Photography participants also impressed the judges with five of their best photographs, the topic being ‘Come home to nature’. La Martinere for boys placed first and Don Bosco Park Circus came in second, at the debate; arguing the motion, ‘Economic Growth is the Solution to Climate Change’,

The much awaited music event saw stellar performances by all the participating schools and was the perfect end to Klima 2013.

Loreto House was declared the overall winner, but being the host school, the trophy was graciously passed on to the Runners Up, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School. St. James’ School stood at the third position.

Klima 2013 was successful in its endeavour of creating a platform for like-minded students of Kolkata to come together and start to make a change. Taking back this planet-friendliness into our daily lives today, will surely translate into that huge change we need in society, in future!
