Just for ED 2013!
• Search giant Google, celebrated the 43rd Earth Day with an interactive doodle. It was Google’s 13th Earth Day doodle. The elaborate animation showed the cycle of seasons, waxing and waning of the Moon by the rising and setting of the Sun and Moon. The users could also bring rain or snow by clicking on the clouds.

• Earth Day Organic Brunch - Swissotel and Earth Day Network India present The Face of Climate Change over an Earth Day commemorative brunch with counters of organic dishes, displays of organic products, and Earth Day Wear by Kolkata designers. Children will learn craft making from recycling and enjoy other activities at Maaya.

How eco-friendly are our ED celebrations, actually?
While good intentions abound, sometimes we overlook the obvious in our enthusiasm for Planet Earth. EarthSmiles.net's PlanetPoints programme tracks public eco-events to assign an internal ESR score, and help PlanetPoints with research facilitating their eco assesments for those under the voluntary Planet lable. This year we saw a lot of unneccessary paper wastage including wearable paper lables distributed by the Earth Day Network (EDN).

While this is sometimes unavoidable, creative thinking will have to be applied to help us get the eco message across - in an eco way!

Youth show the way to eco friendly Earth Day
A day for Mother Earth
Meera Bhowmik
APRIL 2013
Poster parade: There seems to be a lot of posters used to get the Earth Day message across - but this is the first time we've heard of an institution recognising the waste - and that something had to be done to prevent the paper from being discarded once the event was over. Kudos to the Frank Anthony Public School for avoiding plastic banners and pledging to recycle the posters!
The earth is not to conquer but to live in. To thank Mother Earth for all that she gives us and to reiterate the need to safeguard our home - our planet - April 22 is designated Earth Day. [Read more about ED here» – Ed]

Celebrated by over 1 billion people across 192 countries, the Earth Day Network was designated by the UN in 2009 to co-ordinate the event. In India, events were organised in various cities all across the29 states. Kolkata, too, had a number of awareness programs varying from mall events and panel discussions to cultural programs and parties by various educational institutions and other organisation.

Gen Y also showed their willingness in working towards an eco friendly life; with lively participation. EarthSmiles.net brings you a few of the ED 2013 happenings staged by the youth.

The Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) students in action
on Earth Day 2013.
A presentation by the students of Class X informed all about the effectiveness of the East Kolkata Wetlands which prevent floods, recycles water an produces around 13,000 tons of fish per year. An informative presentation by Abhirup Mondal on Trade in Wildlife also received much appreciation. Interesting slogans as “Stop Pollution, find a Solution” and “See Green See Life” were written on placards and placed across the auditorium. The ‘Painting while Dancing’ and the famous Michael Jackson’s cult hit ‘Heal the World’ by the school choir concluded the show.

The effectiveness of the show promised to continue as Mrs. I. Chakraborty, the organiser of the show, claimed that all the paper used for making placards, charts and the canvas shall be recycled into handmade paper. We hope they are!

Another first timer in celebrating the Earth’s ‘Birthday’ was Women’s Christian College. Though the campus was involved in the examination by the University of Calcutta the Eco Club was packed with a bunch of enthusiastic students. Professor of the Geography Department from the University of Calcutta, Dr. Lakshminarayan Sathpathi, played the chief guest and made an interesting presentation to the students explaining the intertwined relation between values, ethics, income and technology and its gradual advent to jeopardise the “natural” environment and a final word a hope for better living.

The Frank Anthony Public School with the special green and brown dress code for the day presented a special cultural program for the first time to aware pupils about the safeguarding measures they need to take to save their beloved Mother Earth. An inspiring speech from the Vice Principal Mr. Rebeiro followed by popular Rabindrasangeet ‘Akash Bhora Surjo Tara’ commenced the show. A skit on the hazardous effects of plastic with slogans “Plastic jalao, jhamela barao” and “Your burning desire, causes hazardous results” received huge rounds of applauses and cheers from the audience.
PhD scholar from West Bengal State University and guest lecturer at the environmental science department of the Asutosh College, Arijit Chatterjee presented an attention grabbing presentation on ‘Our role in environment’. It not only highlighted the problems but also provided solutions that can be implemented by every individual like saving water, reusing plastic bottles instead of dumping them etc. An inter college competition in poster making and environmental documentaries was judged by Dr. Sathpathi. Shri Shikshayatan College was declared overall winners for their innovative use of waste material to explain eco hazards in the posters. After the huge success of the previous year’s three day youth driven programme, the Birla Institute of Technology and Museum (BITM) this year too had another successful event. Children from various institutes and schools were taken to the East Kolkata Wetlands for an eco walk. The walk was followed by a poster making competition.
St.Xavier's College, too, had photography contest themed on nature and environment. It was judged by ace photographer and the owner of Calcutta Photo tours, Manjit Singh Hoonjan and photographer Iftekar Ahsan.

Mainstream Eco organisations like Earth Day Network, Saving Tiger, Green for Life Foundation and others engaged themselves in activities like promotion of environment conscious movies, encouragement towards consumption of eco friendly organic food and life style – quiet but positive commitments to the Earth. (Not so quiet were the political parties who could be found blaring loudspeakers to voice their opinion on petty political issues causing immense noise pollution on the day!)
