In 2008, when planning began for the launch of EarthSmiles.net, the website was conceived as a sort of environmental portal, leading people to content which would inform, and hopefully, spur them to action. Those were the days of righteous eco-indignation - romantic eco-activism such as Greenpeace's antics made environmentalism sort of a fringe movement - more alarming to regular folk than their governments' denials of climate change not being a thing. EarthSmiles.net's incubators were convinced that with enough rational input, we could mainstream this into a way of life, allow people see environmental degredation as real as the imminent fallout - and willling to change their lifestyles to make a difference. CO2 in the atmosphere 385ppm.
When you love the world you're on, you live a planet-friendly life: a more harmonious and thoughtful way of life respecting and conserving the common good of Mother earth. EarthSmiles.net's "activity around the website," involves others in this goal, making positive, measurable, impact.
From the start, EarthSmiles.net was built around three concepts:
One, be focused on information and the solutions to environmental issues, rather than the problem. We desire to create habits which will lead to a greener future, and create alternatives - rather than sloganeer and agitate on existing problems - leaving solutions to others. Two, be inclusive, non-political and friendly – work and share with everyone, respecting suggestions and valuing assistance. Three, EarthSmiles.net was always conceived as a youth driven venture. Youth were already concerned about their future and were frustrated at adults not doing much to secure a good one for them. Apart from mentoring and training, every aspect of the organisation was (and is) fronted by a rotating staff of high school and college/university students, who "graduate" from EarthSmiles.net with real green skills and planet-friendliness already their way of their life.
Local news the focus of EarthSmiles.net, and though this is more impactful than general environmental news, its impact is hard to measure, other than the reach of the website and social media appendages, including EarthUpdated! TV.
But it is EarthSmiles.net's "activity around the website,"where we continue to make an impact, A measurable one. Though CO2 in the atmosphere is now +413ppm.
Earthsmiles.net uses it website, social media and direct outreach at schools and youth institutions to green young minds.
From recycling polybags and used paper to upcycling PET bottles, to creating pens made of newspaper - Earthsmiles.net works to keep stuff out of the landfill.
Experimental solar cookers, an efficient and low cost home air-purifier and other fun green gadgets keep innovation high on the Earthsmiles.net aganda.
