Now, Cleanathon!

“Banega Swachh India” .... but when? Cleanup drives do spread awareness, but are attitudes changing? Many, many clean up campaigns later - EarthSmiles.net has participated in them since 2009 - and the city has not changed a bit. The cleaners themselves seem enthusiastic enough, but are they representative of a city of millions? What are we doing wrong?

Kolkata – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern for the poor state of sanitation and hygiene in the country saw the launch of a nationwide campaign against garbage and uncleanliness. As a part of this initiative, NDTV in partnership with Reckitt Benckiser (Dettol) launched a large scale, nationwide sanitation and hygiene drive called “Banega Swachh India”, with an aim to spread awareness, build toilets and makes proper sanitation a reality for all by the year 2019.
Garbage Free India (GFI) was selected to organise a clean-up campaign in Kolkata and help NDTV and Dettol to spread their message to the citizens .
On December 14, 2014 morning, volunteers and school children gathered outside Simpark Mall in the New Market area. The programme started as more joined in. Once ready with the materials, the clean-up participants quite enthusiastically pitched in, inspired by the GFI Anthem, which was sung by volunteers.
The brooms, plastic trash bags (not recommended though!) and bins were provided by GFI. 50 masks and 50 gloves each were provided by the Medica SuperSpeciality Hospital and Woodlands SuperSpeciality Hospital, respectively.

Bhavika, a GFI volunteer says, “It is the first time I am volunteering for GFI and I think it is a very necessary to keep our surroundings clean to live a healthy life.”
School students from The Heritage, the Assembly of God Church School (Park Street), Shri Shikshayatan, La Martiniere (Boys and Girls,) and Chowringhee High School participated in this event. Also, NGOs like - Vikramshila Nabadisha, Centre for Education and Environment (CEE), Green for Life Foundation (G4L), EarthSmiles.net, Ektara, Soroptimist International of Calcutta and South Kolkata came forward to support the cause.
According to a recent study by South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE), of the 5,372-tonne waste generated, only 700 tonne is recycled, though recyclable waste is around 1,900 tonnes. The remaining is dumped at the Dhapa landfill.
Sheela Kapoor, the local councilor of New Market area says, “Since New Market is a commercial area and is mostly crowded, we have tried speaking to the shopkeepers to keep the area clean but not much improvement has been seen. I am glad that GFI with its partnering schools and NGOs have selected this area to spread awareness about the importance of proper hygiene.”
The response from the Trader's Federation of New Market and a lot of other citizens was good - since they quite enthusiastically came forward and helped in the cleaning process.
“Our school is involved in many activities; one of them is cleanliness drives. Here, it was a great experience since we could be a part of such a huge campaign and reach out to more people” said Arihant Sancheti from La Martiniere for boys.
On December 14, 2014 another clean-up campaign was held in Kolkata by the Lions Club International named 'Clean City Dream City'.
